Small-scale battery storage is also making inroads, and in off-grid solar applications for energy access, the vast majority of systems now include a storage unit.

Globally, the pace of demand response growth is far behind the 500 GW of capacity called for in 2030 in the Net Zero Scenario, under which the need for electricity system flexibility – defined as the hour‐to‐hour change in output required from dispatchable resources – more than doubles to 2030.

Solar becomes the largest source, accounting for one-fifth of energy supplies. Solar PV capacity increases 20-fold between now and 2050, and wind power 11-fold. Net zero means a huge decline in the use of fossil fuels. They fall from almost four-fifths of total energy supply today to slightly over one-fifth by 2050.

Batteries are an essential part of the global energy system today and the fastest growing energy technology on the market. Battery storage in the power sector was the fastest growing energy technology in 2023 that was commercially available, with deployment more than doubling year-on-year. Strong growth occurred for utility-scale battery
Moreover, falling costs for batteries are fast improving the competitiveness of electric vehicles and storage applications in the power sector. The IEA''s Special Report on Batteries and Secure Energy Transitions highlights the key role batteries will play in fulfilling the recent 2030 commitments made by nearly 200 countries at COP28 to put the

The clean energy sector of the future needs both batteries and electrolysers. The price of lithium-ion batteries – the key technology for electrifying transport – has declined sharply in recent years after having been developed for widespread use in consumer electronics. Governments in many countries have adopted policies
In addition to PSH, CSP storage and batteries, the IEA Special Hydropower Market Report estimated the energy storage capabilities of hydropower (IEA, 2021f). Accordingly, existing conventional reservoir hydropower plants can store up to 1 500 TWh of electricity, significantly more than all other storage technologies combined.
Moreover, battery storage can alleviate grid congestion in times of high supply, offering an outlet to capture and store excess renewable electricity that would otherwise be lost. And they provide highly technical services to the grid, such as voltage and frequency control, that can help system operators.

Global capability was around 8 500 GWh in 2020, accounting for over 90% of total global electricity storage. The world''s largest capacity is found in the United States. The majority of plants in operation today are used to provide daily balancing. Grid-scale batteries are catching up, however. Although currently far smaller than pumped
The growth in EV sales is pushing up demand for batteries, continuing the upward trend of recent years. Demand for EV batteries reached more than 750 GWh in 2023, up 40% relative to 2022, though the annual growth rate slowed slightly compared to in 2021‑2022. Electric cars account for 95% of this growth. Globally, 95% of the growth in battery

The greenhouse gas emissions of PV electricity amount to 53.6 g CO2-eq/kWh. For the three storage capacities (5, 10, and 20 kWh), the total greenhouse gas emissions from 1 kWh of electricity generation for self-consumption via a PV-battery system are 80, 84, and 88 g CO2-eq/kWh, respectively (Tab. 4.1 and Fig. 4.1).
If flow batteries achieve widespread commercialisation earlier than expected, then utility-scale storage technology could shift away from LFP batteries towards vanadium flow batteries. The early commercialisation of vanadium flow batteries results in 2.5 times more demand for vanadium compared to the base case in 2030 and 50% more demand in 2040.
